Free Saturday/Sunday walks from London

The below walks are by invitation via WhatsApp only.  For those that wish to take advantage of GroupSaver train ticket, I just need a member to volunteer for each event - just contact Michael.  I WILL SEND YOU UPDATE TRAIN TIME NEARER TO DATE.

1st of April 2023 

River Wey & Downs Link Walk 1st April 2023 10:10am to 4:30pm

Starting from Guildford station we will walk along the River Wye, into woodland and sandy paths before reaching St Martha’s Church for lunch. St Martha’s Church is one of the highest church with a panoramic views of the Surrey Hills. This walk has many good high viewpoints.  We will be walking in an area known for Blue Bells, they are out for a short time during April/May.  The last 6 photos are from this walk.

*Quick Facts*

- Walking Distance: approx. 12 miles circular walk.

 

- Walk Duration: Walking time of 4.5-5.0 hours with a 2 very steep hills to walk up. With breaks will be probably be back at the station for 4:30pm at the earliest. If the pub along the river is open we will have a drink after the walk.

 

- Terrain & Difficulty: starting with river tow paths then woodland with 2 very steep hills. 

 

This walk will be cancelled if heavy rain is forecasted for the whole duration of the walk. Michael will give 12 hours advance notice. Keep an eye out on messages posted on this information site

Meeting at Guildford station (GLD) for 10:10am outside Costa Coffee, trains will leave from London Waterloo.

BY TRAIN:  train times to be confirmed: Please catch the 08:54 from London Waterloo (WAT) to arrive at Guildford (GLD) for 10:02.  One changes required

Meet at Waterloo early and get a GroupSaver ticket for 3 to 9 members. We will be returning back to Guildford station (GLD) after the walk so best buy a return ticket.  Michael W will NOT be travelling via train as he will be driving to Guildford so if you wish to travel with other members with the GroupSave discount.  Happy to set up a WhatsApp group for that day for those that wish to meet for the GroupSaver. 

If you missed your train, don't call me as we cannot wait for the next train, it will not be fair to keep the group waiting for late arrivals. However, we will wait if the train is delayed.

BY CAR: If you are parking at the station, park at the bays away from the station (100 metres away). Those bays are much cheaper. For your sat nav the post code address for the station is GU1 4UT.

                                 2nd of April 2023

Sunday 2nd 2023 - 10:00am to 4:30pm - Box Hill circular walk - 12 miles

Box Hill is most famous for the panoramic far-reaching views to the South. From the stone structure viewpoint you can see for more than 15 miles ahead; with Surrey and East Sussex stretching out beneath you.  From here we will walk down to the foot of Box Hill and cross the river Mole via the 16 hexagonal stepping stones. We will walk pass Polesden Lacey, a Georgian National trust building and after another few hours walking we walk through Denbies vineyard wine estate.  The first six images are of my Box Hill walk.  There will also be the optional 'Box Hill Challenge" for anyone that wish to test their fitness level (walk up the 254 steps over a distance of 500 metres and a accent of 105 metres in your fastest time).  During the past 12 years Michael has recorded times for the fastest 100 members, names of fastest 30 at the end of this page)

Meeting at Box Hill & Westhumble station (BXW) for 10:00am outside at the car park.  

BY TRAIN: Train leaving London Waterloo (WAT) at 08:33 and arriving at Box Hill & Westhumble station (BXW) for 09:48 - 2 change required (details collated on 1st April, check for any changes nearer to date) Michael will be driving to the station and will meet you at the station car park. 

Possible to get a GroupSaver train discount if travelling with 3+ people.  Happy to set up a WhatsApp group for that day for those that wish to meet for the GroupSaver.

BY CAR:  For those that plan to drive, THERE IS VERY LIMITED CAR PARKING AT BOX HILL STATION.  Post code for the station: RH5 6BT.  The car park is free.

Saturday 8th January 2022 - 10am to 4:30pm: Merstham to Boxhill walk - 12 miles: An linear walk starting from Merstham station (MHM) and follows along the North Downs, with panoramic viewpoints at Reigate Hill, Colley Hill and Box Hill.  There will be several steep climbs.

There are a few places to get refreshments however the waiting times can be too long, so bring enough food and water for the whole day.  Hiking boots are essential as the trails can be muddy and slippery 

This walk will be cancelled if heavy rain is forecasted for the whole duration of the walk. Michael will give 12 hours advance notice.

DECEMBER 2021

Sunday 12th December 2021 - 10am to 3:00: Happy Valley and the North Down walk - 10 miles:  Starting and ending at Coulsdon South Station (zone 6).  We will be walking through fields up to the North Downs with good viewpoints. There are several hills and fields to walk across so hiking boots will be essential.

 

Train leaving London Bridge at 09:28 and arriving at Coulsdon South (CDS) for 09:53 - no change required (details collated on 1st April, check for any changes nearer to date) Michael will be driving to the station and will meet you at the station car park - head towards the ticket office.  There are no places for refreshments so make sure you bring food and water for the whole day.

Meeting at Coulsdon South station (CDS) for 10:00am outside at the station car park.  

BY TRAIN: Train leaving London Bridge at 09:28 and arriving at Coulsdon South (CDS) for 09:53 - no change required (details collated on 1st April, check for any changes nearer to date) Michael will be driving to the station and will meet you at the station car park. For the car park, cross over the footbridge to the ticket office.

Will not have WhatsApp group for that day as this station is Zone 6 (you can use your Oyster card) and will not be much cheaper with a GroupSaver.  It is also possible to get off at Coulsdon Town station which is only 5 minutes walk to Coulsdon South station.

BY CAR:  For those that plan to drive, you can park at a free residential street (4 Marlpit Avenue CR5 2HE - park on the right side of the road) only 5 minutes walk to the station.

Possible to get a GroupSaver train discount if travelling with 3+ people.  Happy to set up a WhatsApp group for that day for those that wish to meet for the GroupSaver.  It is also possible to get off at Coulsdon Town station which is only 5 minutes walk to Coulsdon South station. 

If you missed your train, don't call me as we cannot wait for the next train, it will not be fair to keep the group waiting for late arrivals. However, we will wait if the train is delayed.

BY CAR:  For those that plan to drive, you can park at a free residential street (4 Marlpit Avenue CR5 2HE - park on the right side of the road) only 5 minutes walk to the station.

Sunday 9th May 2021 - 10:00am to 4:30pm - Box Hill circular walk - 12 miles

Box Hill is most famous for the panoramic far-reaching views to the South. From the stone structure viewpoint you can see for more than 15 miles ahead; with Surrey and East Sussex stretching out beneath you.  From here we will walk down to the foot of Box Hill and cross the river Mole via the 16 hexagonal stepping stones. We will walk pass Polesden Lacey, a Georgian National trust building and after another few hours walking we walk through Denbies vineyard wine estate.  The first six images are of my Box Hill walk.  There will also be the optional 'Box Hill Challenge" for anyone that wish to test their fitness level (walk up the 254 steps over a distance of 500 metres and a accent of 105 metres in your fastest time).  During the past 12 years Michael has recorded times for the fastest 100 members, names of fastest 30 at the end of this page)

River Wey & Downs Link Walk 17th October 2021 10:00am to 4:00pm - Circular walk 

Starting and finishing at Guildford station we will walk along the River Wye, into woodland and sandy paths before reaching St Martha’s Church for lunch. St Martha’s Church is one of the highest church with a panoramic views of the Surrey Hills. This walk has many good high viewpoints.  After the walk we will be visiting a lovely pub by the river.

River Wey & Downs Link Walk 16th May 2021 10:10am to 4:30pm

Starting from Guildford station we will walk along the River Wye, into woodland and sandy paths before reaching St Martha’s Church for lunch. St Martha’s Church is one of the highest church with a panoramic views of the Surrey Hills. This walk has many good high viewpoints.  We will be walking in an area known for Blue Bells, they are out for a short time during April/May.  The last 6 photos are from this walk.

Meeting at Guildford station (GLD) for 10:10am outside Costa Coffee, trains will leave from London Waterloo.

BY TRAIN:  train times to be confirmed: Please catch the 08:54 from London Waterloo (WAT) to arrive at Guildford (GLD) for 10:02.  One changes required

Meet at Waterloo early and get a GroupSaver ticket for 3 to 9 members. We will be returning back to Guildford station (GLD) after the walk so best buy a return ticket.  Michael W will NOT be travelling via train as he will be driving to Guildford so if you wish to travel with other members with the GroupSave discount.  Happy to set up a WhatsApp group for that day for those that wish to meet for the GroupSaver.
